In case you didn’t know, the Golf Sportwagen is getting some updates in 2017.
Most importantly, 4motion with a 6 speed. For under $24k. Also upgrading normal auto to DSG.
Less importantly, a baby Allroad called the Alltrak. Which actually has more storage room than an Allroad. Hmm.

No diesel trim either

About damned time. Sign me up for a DSG. I wonder if I can walk in my dealer and pretend I know nothing about VWs except for "all that EPA diesel mess from CNN..." and score a better deal.

I still have no idea why DSGs are better than automatics.

I can get a manual GTI with Xenons and leather, but I can’t get a manual SportWagen with the same? Tsk tsk.

They’re not, at least not for regular daily driving use. They’re like a slipping manual transmission driven by a rookie.

They fart.
Compared to the ZF 8-speed, I’d say it’s just personal preference, but it feels a lot more eager when compared to traditional slushboxes.

No 4Motion 6MT in SEL trim is lame. SEL is the only one with non crappy seats (which is why I bought an SEL).

The DSG isn’t an uprgade; it’s a downgrade. They drive like a slipping manual being driven by a rookie or an idiot. Plus, they require you to use the paddles in order to get the most out of it and to feel decent.
Leave the DSG to the high performance sports cars. They have NO place in daily driver economy cars.

Driver involvement and quickness of shifts. A WRX is 1.2 seconds slower with their auto compared to a manual to 60; a DSG GTI is the same to 60 whether you get a manual or DSG.

I haven’t driven any automatic yet which I liked overall; In stop and go traffic, sure, but not when in the twisties or on mountains. Torque converters get me swearing, which is not a good thing. I have never driven a DSG, but I imagine it would solve the issues I have with the conventional boxes. Those issues being; lack of control and shifting at the wrong time.

Unless torque converters have made huge improvements recently (they probably have...) a DSG-type transmission is the only type of automatic I’d even consider in a daily driver.

Yes, they have
Also, Honda has, in the TLX and RLX, a DCT with a torque converter. This will probably work well.

We’ll have to see. I’ve only driven somewhat outdated automatics, with the most recent being a 2016 Chevy Impala Limited rental (so the old model). Not one of those auto boxes I liked, at times they all shifted (or didn’t shift) at moments I would’ve picked very differently. That’s frustrating behavior I don’t want in a daily driver.
The Impala was horrific while decending a mountain. And yes, I had the PRNDL in L with L being the lowest option (no 3 or 2). While climbing it only really worked because of the overpowered engine.

The auto in the WRX is a CVT. That is why it is slower.

It strikes me as odd that they chose S trim only. Maybe that will change

That’s what I find weird. I don’t see why it would be so hard to put it on all trims or why they only did S trim. Maybe it's to gauge interest. Not sure. Since all the engines are the same and differences are purely cosmetic/interior, running gear should be interchangeable

It seems that the S will have a smaller engine, maybe the 1.4t because the other variants don’t have the option of 4motion or the DSG.

Oh yeah, it’s totally interchangeable. My original plan was to buy a TDI S GSW and swap in GTI seats, until I got a killer deal on an SEL.
Usually those kinds of packaging decisions are made by bean counters.

I don’t think the engines are changing. The S without 4motion is still the 1.8T with a 5 speed. All the digging/research I’ve found only shows the addition of the 4motion options and some changes in added equipment options, but the engines are the same

Yeah that's my plan too, swap GTI wheels and seats to the 4motion S. Im just confused as to why they only added the 6speed and 4motion to the lowest trim

Probably to entice people into an Alltrack SE 6MT if they want more stuff.

Well, the CVT might make the separation worse(some CVT transmissions argue they are faster than a traditional auto whereas others are clearly slower). I just found the golf 1.8t numbers and the manual gets to 60 in 6.8ish and auto takes 7.5ish seconds.
Autos are slower than manuals. DSGs aren’t.

No, Chevy as a volume brand has been discontinued in Europe and we certainly never got the Impala (or Malibu). I was playing tourist in the US last month.

oh ok, that makes more sense
And yeah, I hate that they took out the 3 and 2 modes! And don’t forget, the Fiesta DCT only has D and L for six gears, and no paddles. The base 4-speed torque converter automatic isn’t available on US-market Fiestas.
The Impala’s automatic is probably much better than the Fiesta’s DCT.

Not phased. Still going with the S 4M!

If they had the 4Motion 6-Speed on the 2015, I probably would have bought it. I test drove a TSI 5-speed shortly after dieslgate broke and wasn’t thrilled with the lack of a 6th gear. AWD was also something I was looking for. Ended up with a 6MT Forester. Might have to take another look at this guy.

An amazing deal on one of these is the only way I don’t walk out of VW with my check after turning in my JSW tdi. I won’t be holding my breath on that deal happening.

That's why I'm excited. Most cars I've driven with 5 speeds almost always feel like they need an extra gear on the highway, and I've driven quite a few. That's why I've been apprehensive about getting a gsw. This changes everything.

There’s actually been quite a few good deals on LE’s and SE’s lately. We'll see if that translates to this one

I’m glad to see they are putting the 6 speed with the 4motion at least. I hated the 5 speed I drove the other day when I was at the dealership, I have the 6 speed in my TDI and I am not a DSG fan.
